A long time ago when our great-grandmothers were learning & practising the embroidery craft, they were sure to decorate all towels and tablecloths in their houses. There was no tradition of composing samplers of embroidery in Russia. But still it is quite possible to imagine how young ladies of the 19th century were sitting at the window doing their home task on embroidery, how they exchanged of patterns and secrets of craftsmanship. Such a sampler could have been stored in family and could have reached us through the generations.
